Let me Introduce you to Dean Labroad AKA Captain Dean. This kid very much reminds me of myself at the age of 15. Spending every opportunity after school and on the weekend, hunting fish. Nothing else matters at that age apart from "Catching that big one".
Born and bred on the mid NSW coast town of Nelsons Bay, this kid already seems to be an old hand when it comes to the art of fishing. Not only does he have pictures to prove it but this kid can talk it up as well, as you'll read in this Interview. If there's any young kid worthy of becoming a Pirate.....this kid is definitely one in the making......aaaarrrrgh!!!
Q1. Blackbeard - So Dean, How old are you??
Dean - 16 pretty much (15 nearly 16 that means ;-) hahaaarrgh!!)
Q2. Blackbeard - How old were you when you started fishing??
Dean - My first trip fishing was when my dad took me rock fishing the second day I could walk....so about 2
Q3. Blackbeard - How often do you fish??
Dean - I push my boat in after school at least 3 days during the week and every sat and Sunday. Blackbeard - So Im guessing you fish the estuary?? Dean - yer
Q4. Blackbeard - Can you remember the first fish you ever caught??
Dean - My first fish was a legal size drummer off the rocks when I was about 3. Blackbeard - Rrrrrrgh!!...Scuttling Cuttlefish!!....Thats really young!!...Did your father help you or did you wind it in all by yourself?? Dean - Nar, my dad probs done most of the work lol....as you can imagine its dangerous enough fishing off the rocks lol. Blackbeard - Absolutely!!!
Q5. Blackbeard - What kind of fishing do you like the most??
Dean - my favourite types of fishing are jewie fishing with soft plastics on lite gear, flathead fishing with plastics, mudcrabbing by hand and I'm starting to get into a bit of Marlin fishing
Q6. Blackbeard - Biggest fish you have ever caught??
Dean - Ive lost 2 black marlin around 100kgs, but the biggest fish I have landed would most likely be a big barcod over 10kgs or a 120cm flathead around 9kgs. Blackbeard - Staggering Starfish!!....Thats awesome mate!!!!
Q7. Blackbeard - Last fishing session, where and what did you catch??
Dean - Last fishing session was outside for Marlin about a month ago. I lost a black Marline around 100kgs and I got a Cobia around 8kg to the side of the boat on my new electric reel, got heaps of flathead bottom bouncing an heaps of nanygai, morwong and other reef species....and i got a nice stripy tuna. Blackbeard - Thats pretty cool......rrrrrrr!!
Q8. Blackbeard - Best fishing session ever??
Dean - My best fishing session ever was the arvo when I went up to my jew spot after school and within 15 mins I had landed 3 jews and later that night landed 3 more and lost like 5 all up....and even lost a rod that night from a Jew lol....BEST FISHING SEASON EVER!! all on soft plastics. Blackbeard - You're a freak kid....hahahaaaaargh!!!
Q9. Blackbeard - Do you have a preferred brand of arsenal??
Dean - Yer my favourite rod and reel atm for inside the estuary is a Daiwa exceller combo (Thats a 3 - 6kg carbon graphite rod) and a 3000da exceller reel with 10lb fins braid and my favourite outside rod is a TLD 50 reel on a Shimano Aqua tip rod. Blackbeard - Aaaarrrrgh!!...You really do know your stuff!!
Q10. Blackbeard - Worst fishing Injury??
Dean - LOL my worst fishing injury ever was when I got bit by a BIG blue swimmer crab on my finger!! Check out the pic lol. There was blood everywhere!! LOL. Blackbeard - Did you get sweet revenge by eating him??? Dean - LOL to get his nipper off my finger I had to bite his nipper off and then I took him home and Boiled the FU#K out of him. Blackbeard - Hahahaarrrrrrgh!!!!...Very Pirate like Indeed!!
Q11. Blackbeard - Do you eat fish and if so, how do you like it cooked??
Dean - I like to give alot of my crabs and fish away to old people / Old Fisherman I know...but when I do eat crab I like to boil a lemon cut in half with the Mudcrab and blue swimmers with a pinch of salt and pepper. And fish for example Jewfish....i like it cooked whole with lemon, tomato and spices inside and on the bbq.
Q12. Blackbeard - What is your favourite fishing show??
Dean - ifish and I got to meet Paul from ifish a few months ago. I gave him a few muddies. Blackbeard - No way!!....Thats totally cool. How did that come about?? Dean - I met Paul because I talked to him heaps on Facebook and he let me know when he was coming up this way and we made a time to meet. Blackbeard - Was he a nice guy?? Dean - Yer heaps nice and he was stoked with the Muddies.
Q13. Blackbeard - So, why do you like the Long Reef Pirate Crew and who is your Favourite Pirate??
Dean - The reason why I love the Long Reef Pirate Crew is cause I've always wanted to be a pirate lol....and my fav Pirate is Blackbeard cause he's the only one I know well enough lol. Blackbeard - Why thank you young buccaneer!!!.....I am definitely the coolest pirate of them all hahahaaaaarrrgh!!!
Q14. Blackbeard - Why do you fish??
Dean - I fish cause I love the feeling when you see the fish landed in your hands or when you pull out a 5kg Mudcrab from a hole with your bare hands lol and cause fishing is what god made me good at!!! Blackbeard - That is Treasure....need I say more???.....rrrrrrrgh!!
